Life and death – the meaning of it all!
I saw a man in his fifties at the bus stop, with concerns all over his face, arising from deep within him. These didn’t seem to be just the immediate ones around early arrival of the bus so that he can get home before the rains, after a hard day’s work. These are probably concerns around how to fund his son’s education and how to manage his daughter’s marriage and so on. Well this man, who probably has a tough life as a head of a family, perhaps had a tough life as a child too. Struggling his way to a living, he will probably fulfill his duties somehow or the other. But then like all of us, one day he will die.
There are so many, who come, live and then die. In between birth and death we aspire for so many things. But the beginning and the end are the same for all of us – we were born and we will die. So what is this world all about? Money, power, sex, passion, possessiveness, anger, sorrow, greed, failure, success, adulation – all these seem to be just tides in an ocean, rising and dying, again and again. They are not the water, but an agitation of it, occurrences that do not have any origin in themselves. But when we look at the sea we notice the waves and not the water. What a pity?
Thinking about this, I tend to ask the question – why all this or even, what is all this? In the long story of time, we are mere specs, a single granule of sand in the vast desert of history. Yes, death is the only certainty and life is a mere passing occurrence in the drama of the world. Like all of us, I was born, I live and I will die. So what is the meaning of it all is? Is there any meaning to it at all? May be our mind is just conspiring us into believing that there is a deeper meaning to life, where there is none. If that is so, am I a mere event, an existence? How shall I know? How can I myself ask the question and provide the answer too? Who is to say what the right answer is? I continue to seek!

good article. all our spiritual gurus have given answer for this question, i feel.
Drop the question, else one will be replaced by another. Ask instead, who is the Questioner, who seeks? :)
I struggle with that though! I find the duality very difficult to get rid of between the questioner and the question. But yes, I have read many saints say - when one finds the Source and sinks in it, the duality vanishes and wisdom dawns
